Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. The talented musician rose to stardom in the music industry in 2012 when he released “Like To Party,” a hit single from his album L.I.F.E. 

Life and Education

Burna Boy was born on the 2nd of July 1991 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He comes from a mixed ancestry as his mother is from the western part of Nigeria; she’s a Yoruba woman named Bose Ogulu.

His dad Samuel Ogulu hails from the South-South region of Nigeria, Burna Boy comes from a creative family with his youngest sister, Nissi Ogulu a singer and mechanical engineer, and his other sister, Romani Ogulu a scientist and designer.

His grandfather, Benson Idonijie was a veteran broadcaster and part-time member of the Fela Kuti band. Burna Boy spent most of his early years in Port-Harcourt and Lagos state and was exposed to music early.

The Afrobeats singer attended Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Ogun State, Nigeria, for his secondary education. He then moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied Media Technology at the University of Sussex between 2008 and 2009.

Burna Boy later studied Media Communication and Culture at Oxford Brookes University from 2009 to 2010. He returned to Nigeria for an internship at Rhythm 93.7 FM before kick-starting his career.

Career

Burna Boy started his career with two mixtapes, “Burn Notice” and “Burn Identity,” before signing with Aristokrat Records

He rose to stardom when he released the hit song “Like To Party” in 2012; the song was the lead single off his debut album L.I.F.E.

Burna Boy earned a nomination for the 2013 “Next Rated Artiste Award” at the Headies. After two years with Aristokrat Records, he left to create his music label, “Spaceship Entertainment,” in 2015.

Since creating his record label, he has dropped hugely successful albums and worked with diverse artists.

In 2019, Burna Boy was part of the group of African artists to feature in Beyonce’s album titled The Lion King: The Gift. 

He is well recognized not just in the South African entertainment industry but in Africa in general. However, Burna boy was the first African that has been nominated twice for a Grammy Award.`
