Sho Madjozi, whose real name is Maya Christinah Xischavo Wegerif, was born on 9 May 1992, in Shirley Village, Limpopo, South Africa, to a European father, Marc Wegerif, and a South African mother, Rosemary Phaweri. Her parents divorced at her teenage age, and she had to stay permanently with her mother. She has half-sisters from both parents and is of mixed race due to her parent’s nationality. While growing up, she travelled with her father to various African countries, including Senegal and Tanzania.

Sho Madjozi graduated from the International School of Tanganyika, Tanzania, where she enrolled for her primary education. After graduating high school, she earned a scholarship for exceptional academic performance to study Creative Writing and African Studies at the prestigious Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. After completing her education in the United States, she returned to South Africa, where she studied at the University.
Career
While in the United States, Sho Madjozi started writing poems about identity, race, and politics under the name “Maya, The Poet.” Sho Madjozi was once selected as the Ambassador for Trace Mobile in South Africa. Her rise to fame came when she was featured by the talented rapper “Okmalumkoolkat” in two of his songs, namely “Ngiyashisa Bhe” and “Gui.”
After this collaboration, she started using the stage name “Sho Madjozi.” Sho Madjozi has performed at top events, including the Global Citizen Festival, which featured top international personalities such as Jay Z. Her album “Limpopo Champions League,” which was released in 2018, is well-known and, till today, remains a top song in South Africa.
