Enoch Godongwana is a respected South African politician who serves as the minister of finance. Known for his years of political experience, he is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Early Life and Education
Enoch Godongwana was born on the 9th of June, 1957 in Cala, Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. He matriculated at St. John’s College in Mthatha, East Cape Province of South Africa.
Thereafter, Enoch Godongwana completed a master’s degree program in financial economics at the University of London.
Career
Enoch Godongwana started his political career as a trade unionist. He started as a shop steward before becoming the National Union of Metal Workers organizer between 1983 and 1989.
Also, Enoch Godongwana was a strong member of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and was a founding member of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC).
In 1997, he left the union movement and took up an office in the executive council of the Eastern Cape.
During this period, Enoch Godongwana was elected to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC).
After many years in office, he was sacked in 2004 by Premier Balindlela.
Thereafter, Enoch Godongwana was appointed to serve as the head of the Financial Sector Charter Council. He handles a lot of business at this time.
National Assembly
Enoch Godongwana joined the South African National Assembly on the 14th of November 2008. He was part of the lower house of the South African Parliament and occupied a seat previously held by Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi.
In 2010, he was promised to the Ministry of Economic Development.
Enoch Godongwana was reelected to the national assembly in April 2019 and appointed Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises by then-President Jacob Zuma.
He later resigned in 2011; Enoch left his role as the Deputy Minister of Economic Development and as a member of the National Assembly.
Between 2012 and 2020, Enoch was not involved in politics but rather held non-executive positions with Mondi Plc, Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Platinum Group Metals, and New Development Bank amongst others.
During this period, he remained fully committed to the African National Congress (ANC).
Minister of Finance
Enoch Godongwana was announced as part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet ministers on the 5th of August 2021. He succeeded Tito Mboweni as the minister of finance.
