Lupita Nyong’o (born 1 May 1983) is a globally respected actress who is the daughter of Kenyan Politician Peter Anyang Nyong’o. The famous actress was born in Mexico during the period when her father was a teacher but was raised in Kenya from the age of one. Lupita has received various awards for her acting and ability to play different roles, mainly in international movies.

Lupita Nyong’o was born on 1 May 1983 in Mexico City to Kenyan parents Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, a professor at that time, and Dorothy Ogada Buyu. Lupita has dual citizenship as a result of her birth in Mexico. She is of Luo descent on both sides of her parents and is the second of 6 children.
Her family returned to Kenya when Lupita was just a year old, and coincidentally her father was appointed a professor. This was at the University of Nairobi. She grew up mainly in Nairobi and attended Rusinga International School, where she acted in many plays.
At 14, Lupita played her first role as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, organized by Nairobi’s Repertory Company “Phoenix Players.” At 16, she was sent to Mexico to learn Spanish for seven months and returned to attend St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, where she received an IB Diploma.
In 2013, her father represented “Kisumu County” in the Kenyan Senate, and he became Governor in 2017. Her mother is the manager of the African Cancer Foundation and owns a Communication Company.
Education
Lupita attended Rusinga International School in Kenya and started acting in her first role while being 14 years old. After seven months of learning Spanish at the Universidad Nacional Autó noma de México, she later attended St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, Kenya, where she received an IB Diploma.
Lupita went to the United States for her college education, graduating from Hampshire College with a Degree in Fim and Theatre Studies. Furthermore, she pursued a Master’s Degree in Acting from the Yale School of Drama before her film role as “Pastey” in the movie 12 Years of a Slave (2013).
Career
Between the years 2005 to 2015, Lupita Nyong’o started and broke through in the movie industry internationally. She starred as part of a production crew for many movies, including The Constant Gardner (2005), The Name Sake (2006), and Where God Left His Shoes (2007). In 2008, she starred in “East River,” a short film directed by Marc Grey, before returning to Kenya to feature in “Shuga,” an MTV Base Africa/Unicef Drama about HIV/AIDS prevention.
She wrote her first documentary in 2009 titled “In My Genes”, and directed the music video “The Little Things You Do” by Wahu.
During her Master’s Degree Program at Yale, she appeared in many movies, including The Winter’s Tale, Uncle Vanya, and The Taming of the Shrew, amongst others. She is a receiver of many awards and has been featured in many development projects in Africa.
