Mpho Phalatse is a South African-born medical doctor and a popularly known politician. She previously served as the Mayor of the city of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. 

Mpho Phalatse is an African National Congress member and the first black female Mayor in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Early Life 

Mpho Phalatase was born on the 7th of November, 1977, in Hebron, Pretoria, South Africa. 

She initially stayed with her grandmother for some years before joining her parents in Mabopane, Gauteng, South Africa. 

Mpho Phalatse has enjoyed a lot of success academically and has numerous degree awards, including a Medical and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), a Diploma in Project Management and Programme Management, and a Master’s Degree in Medicine.

Education

There is no information on the schools Mpho Phalatse attended for her primary and secondary education. 

However, she enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand to study chemical engineering. Later, Mpho Phatse opted to become a medical doctor and enrolled at Sefako Makgatho University, where she graduated with an MBChB. 

She is an academic lover and obtained a diploma in project management and program management, as well as a master’s of medicine at Witwatersrand University.

Career

Mpho Phalatse officially became a doctor in 2005 and did her internship at Tembisa Hospital, Gauteng. 

She completed community service in Hammankraal before offering her services at Jubilee Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. 

Mpho Phalatse started her political career after joining the Democratic Alliance Group. In 2016, she was elected to the Johannesburg City Council.

Mpho Phalatse was further elected a member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development by Mayor Mashaba. 

She was elected the Executive Mayor of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality on the 22nd of November, 2021, after receiving 144 out of 265 total votes. 

Mpho Phalatse is the first black woman to serve as Mayor of Johannesburg and the second after Jessie McPherson.
