When Noah’s mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo, married Ngisaveni Abel Shingange, they had two sons, Andrew and Isaac, who were born in 1992. Patricia survived because the bullet missed the spinal cord, brain, and all major nerves and blood arteries in her head before exiting through her nostril with slight damage. Shingange threatened Noah’s life over the phone to avoid being shot himself when he was confronted about the shooting. Following his conviction for attempted murder in 2011, Shingange received a three-year sentence of house arrest.

Trevor Noah Daily Show

Noah became a regular contributor to The Daily Show in December 2014. Comedian Trevor Noah was named the next host of The Daily Show in March 2015, and his stint began on September 28 of the same year.

As soon as he was announced as Stewart’s successor, the Internet was abuzz with criticism of jokes he’d posted on his Twitter account, some of which were deemed disrespectful to women and others as anti-Semitic or making light of the Holocaust.

Reactions to the criticism came from Noah, who tweeted, “To compress my views to a few jokes that didn’t land is neither a genuine reflection or progression of my character nor my maturation as an artist.”

In support of Noah, Comedy Central issued the following statement: “Unlike many comedians, Trevor Noah takes risks; he is controversial and spares no one, including himself. I think it’s unfair to assess him or his comedy based solely on a few of his jokes. Trevor has a bright future at Comedy Central as a skilled comedian.”

According to SAJBD chairperson Mary Kluk, the jokes were not indicative of anti-Jewish sentiment but a characteristic of Noah’s comedic style. Video clips from past stand-up performances of Noah talking about Aboriginal women and the Marikana massacre have emerged, resulting in additional criticism.

Noah’s debut was well-received. For James Poniewozik of the New York Times, “Mr Noah’s debut was mostly successful, it was also because the operating system—they show writing—running underneath” was a big part. “Charming and composed—almost unavoidably low-key compared with the frequently antic and amazed Stewart,” said Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times about him. Three stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix have resulted from Noah’s popularity on the show. To keep him on as host of The Daily Show until at least 2022, Comedy Central renewed Noah’s contract in 2017. In addition, he would develop and present Comedy Central specials each year at the end of the year.

Noah started working on it in April last year to promote Jordan Klepper’s new talk show. The Opposition with Jordan Klepper launched in September and lasted one season. A primetime weekly docuseries, Klepper, will premiere in May 2019. Noah also served as executive producer. When Noah signed a multi-year deal with Viacom in March 2018, he gave them first dibs on any future projects he worked on. Day Zero Productions, Noah’s new international production and distribution company, would also be launched as part of the arrangement.
