Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly named Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is regarded as one of the best and most talented musicians to come out of Africa. Wizkid, as he is professionally known, is an active performer both within and outside Africa and has worked with many artists worldwide.
Early Life and Education
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, was born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria.
He was born into an interfaith household; his father practised Islam, while his mother was of the Christian faith.
Wizkid grew up in a polygamous household with 12 siblings as his father was married to 3 wives, of which his mother was one.
He spent most of his early years in Lagos City, which exposed him to the music culture of Nigeria and influenced his passion for it. At age 11, Wizkid joined a music group that later disbanded, with everyone pursuing solo careers.
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, attended Ijebu Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, Nigeria, for his secondary education.
He later went to Lagos State University (LASU) for his University degree but dropped out in 2009. Wizkid later enrolled at Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo state but dropped out after two sessions.
Career
Wizkid started his career in 2009 when he signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), managed by Banky W. He released his first album in 2010, with the lead single “Holla At Your Boy” being a massive hit that helped to bring his name to the limelight of the Nigerian music industry.
Wizkid won the “Next Rated Artist Award” at the Headies in 2011. Since then, he has released numerous songs and worked with many talented and popular artists.
In South Africa, he has worked with notable acts such as DJ Maphorisa. He gained international recognition in 2014 with “Ojuelegba,” which led to global collaborations with artists like Drake. In 2016, he featured on “One Dance,” which was a global hit, making him the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100.
Wizkid founded his own record label, Starboy Entertainment, and released “Sounds from the Other Side” (2017) and “Made in Lagos”(2020).
Furthermore, he won a Grammy Award in 2021 for his feature on Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl,” and followed up with “More Love, Less Ego” (2022). As of 2025, he launched the “Staryboy Legacy Tour” and received global honors like the BET Global Impact Award.
